Small, compact kitchens can be tough. While they may seem like a design challenge there is a lot of potential for them to be efficient, functional and gorgeous! Even with size restrictions and a limited budget, there are many options available to design a space to your personality and specifications.

Smaller and compact appliances: Begin by choosing small, neat appliances. Bulky ovens, mixers and grinders add to the clutter in a small kitchen and make it look messy and feel claustrophobic. Small details make all the difference! For example, choose a refrigerator that is 24 inches deep instead of 30 inches!

Create the illusion of more space with lighting: Lighting makes all the difference! Well placed lights, such as under cabinet lighting or under-the-counter lighting, highlight the space, making it seem larger and more aesthetically pleasing.

Storage really matters:
Clever storage units could be a boon both in terms of visual appeal and functionality. For instance, give the illusion of built-in cabinets to make your kitchen look neater and more spacious.

Sometimes less is more: If you’re low on cabinet space, resort to open shelving. Put that beautiful crockery on display! This not only helps you out in the space department, but also adds a lot of colour to your kitchen. Which is always a good thing!

Let the sun shine in: When doing up a small kitchen, the sun is your best friend. Natural lighting always adds warmth to a room, giving it a cheerful vibe. Consider making the room appear larger by installing a grand window, that lets a lot of natural light in.

Doing up a small space can be a challenge, but at the end of the day it can be great fun. After all, a happy kitchen makes a happy home!
